Anthem Post-Demo Report
The endless load screens and server login problems that had plagued last week’s VIP demo were fixed, and this last one had no more trouble with that. The game servers were still being tweaked, shut down, and restarted, and that accounted for some crashiness both back to the menu and CTD, but that was pretty much the worst of it. Any other issues I noticed were all things confirmed fixed in the release version.
I spent time in each type of javelin, and ended up enjoying the handling of the Colossus a lot more than I expected to. The Storm is my hands-down favorite, but my number two spot just got filled, surprisingly, by a tank. The Infiltrator was fun to fly, but its combat mechanics will appeal to people who like agile assassin-type characters. That’s not my playstyle, but I can tell people are going to have a lot of fun with it. The Ranger is sort of middle-of-the-road, but it’s intended to be, so that’s fine. The Storm is my go-to. A flying ball of elemental destruction that can blink out of harm’s way in an instant. It was the most entertaining suit of its kind that I’ve ever played with. Flying it was ridiculously fun. More of that, please!
I have a pretty decent rig, and the game ran smooth as glass at a locked 60 fps on ultra with no difficulties. The game world is *gorgeous* and filled, even in the small area we were exploring, with unexpected surprises... like a massive tree with Numenorian-scale statuary halfway up it’s trunk. Would have taken a little longer to notice that if I hadn’t been waiting on a boss to respawn and was hovering my way up and around the tree just to look at it. Surprise giant stone aliens!
Fort Tarsis is also really well done, and changes between day and night with an amazing sky view. It’s going to be player customizable, and I can’t wait to see what options become available. Some of the smaller object textures are a little iffy, but if it’s possible to mod this game, someone will feel compelled to fix that even if BioWare doesn’t. I can understand them not wanting to make anyone’s console attempt to melt down with large texture files, but my machine can take it, and I want ALL THE DETAIL. 😄
I was starting to get a little bored with our playground by the end yesterday, but between these two demos and the closed Alpha, I’ve logged around 55 hours in Anthem. That map was about as explored as a map can get. Having the entire game world to play in is going to be fantastic. All my javelins and my level were utterly maxed out. That was handy for tackling the ash titans that spawned yesterday from a shaper storm. The biggest variety of titan had a major attack that involved its chest opening up and a massive fiery beam shooting out! You really just don’t feel like a proper freelancer until you’ve been Harbingered in the face by one of those things. It was glorious. 😂
So, yeah, I’m in for the release version. I have a great bunch of people on Discord to squad with, I’ve already had loads of fun, and I’m expecting to have loads more. Anthem will, of course, not be everyone’s cup of tea, but for those of us who have been enjoying it, it’s going to be a party in armored suits.
