In terms of the endings in general i approach them with the words in mind of the people you met. Garrus, Javik, even TIM are no romantics about the truth that this war, this struggle for survival will not come easily.
There will be losses, there will be sacrifices and you can't save them all, hence why Thessia had to fall, to keep you and your MC grounded in letting them know thiis is no walk in the park.
Heroes die a lonely death most of the time. The finale here is kinda you sharing Mordin's fate... doing what is necessary in the face of almost certain death, because everyone else might have gotten it wrong.
NOT THE FIRST PERSON TO ASK THIS, AND NOT GONNA BE THE LAST
but, @MadMikeRyan,
I realize IT has its holes. It's still better than that betrayal of an ending to such a trilogy.
Just, let me grasp at my straws, okay? This still depresses me.
I don't really think we should debate plot inconsistencies from "Take Earth Back" to the ending. When you're swarmed by glitches in the last mission, it's kinda evident Bioware buckled up the thing with a rush. The soldiers that were running were generated really poorly (they magically appear behind you), you can just wait and chill while Harbinger doesn't give a fuck about you. Hell, when Shepard falls on the ground after getting up from the beam, his pistol can still fire in that position (with infinite ammo). For my opinion, there is a lot of room for rushing mistakes in the plot.
One: ME3 was rushed project
Two: Plot purposes. It wouldn’t make for a good scene for Shepard to be hit by Harbys beam and then die, just like that
Three: It’s a Video Game
Cause shepard's a badass
Everyone knows that BioWare’s original ending that they planned for got scrapped by EA because they wanted to get the game in production faster. The original ending had some stuff to do with Dark Energy and such (think Tali’s recruitment mission in ME2 with the failing star.) So, that has ALOT to do with the crappy ending
The former lead writer Drew Karpyshyn talked about this in an intervierw with Kotaku, but actually the originally intended ending would have been somewhat similar to what we got in the end: The use of biotics lead to the rising of Dark Energy that threatened the very existence of the galaxy and the Reapers were created to stop that from happening, hence why they harvest (something like that) ........ in the end Shep would've been presented with a choice, save humanity or everyone else except humanity. Now if that aint something. Joupena might know more about it.
As somehow the initial ending was leaked during the development process, Mac Walters and Hudson, and not EA in general, decided to rewrite the ending into to quest for colors.
In the end it does not really matter who is responsible in the first place, as it cannot be undone.
The beam didn't hit Shepard head on,it kinda grazed him
Marolf, weren’t the Reaper ships firing molten tungsten accelerated to near relativistic speeds? Not lasers.
I always put Shepard’s survival down to a) she’d dodged point-blank fire from a Reaper before, b) tech-enhanced reflexes and speed, and c) plot armor. Even so, she came out of it pretty scorched and barely standing.
