Did you romance any character you didn't expect?

I did. I'm pansexual in real life, and female. But due to systemic misogyny, trusting men is not an easy thing for me. So my original plan was to romance Samantha Traynor. But instead, something unexpected happened. I found myself attracted to Garrus.

I don't know, he just felt different from every guy in the game and in real life. He tried to look tough, but behind all that unhealthy stoicism, I could see big puppy dog eyes and a guy who wants to let his emotions out and find more meaning. And for some reason, I think that's kind of cute. So I began romancing him in 2, and now in 3, he helps keep moral up in this stressful crisis the galaxy is in.

First, thank you for sharing a little about yourself.

Second, I think what you described is the real appeal of a lot of BioWare games and the Romances they include. (especially Mass Effect) Exploring a character’s past and even growth as people in the story is one of the reasons I love these games. Romance itself is another interesting way to explore the characters and see new sides of them that you might not see otherwise. It was the same for me when I explored the Jack romance for the first time. When I saw her character trailer for the first time I remember thinking that she going to be an anarchist type character, but as I got to know her I got to see another more vulnerable side. You even see her find her own family in a way in Mass Effect 3 with the students of Grissom Academy. These types of characters and their stories give Mass Effect a more profound impact on us as players.

The very first time I played way back when, my original plan was not to romance anybody. My first Shepard was gonna be focused on the mission before anything else, but when I got to 2, I felt like I was getting close to Tali and the romance with her, just kinda happened. I feel it was meant to happen. Tali has been my favorite romance ever since.

Looking back at it, I think the choice to not make Tali a romance option until 2 was a good one because in 1, Tali wasn't ready for a relationship,, and neither was i clearly but in 2, with our possible death looming, we made the decision to embrace our feelings as we may not have had another chance.

And it was totally worth it.
