Apparently there's cut content involving saving both kaidan and ash.

The cut content can be restored in ME1 using mods. If anything, both surviving might have resulted in a weird love triangle when Shep comes back from the dead in ME2. And let's be honest, we all know who would wear the pants in that relationship.
