I liked it, it was great. Needs a sequel.
Poorly executed and somewhat doomed to fail due to it coming after a very successful game trilogy so the bar was set quite high. I like the multi ability and the freeform combat. Among other things. It had a good premise but lacked in the story, character and a feel of making progress department.
I think it was poorly executed, but I didn't hate the game. I loved it. I played ME:A before the OG 3 games so I could be unbiased and I think it worked well. The first ME1 had a lot lacking in story at first(It is the first game) and felt short. Finished it in 10-14 hours. Plus the gun action was a bit annoying. BUT that's a different conversation. They had some things that occured in the first game they carried over consequences or continued in ME2 and even ME3. Skip to the bottom to skip the specific things I think was done poorly
I think ME:A had a lot of story issues, gameplay issues even(Though it is vastly improved from ME:3 in regards to combat behavior). I didn't play ME:A the way I did in ME:3 which is primarily cover. You never jumped in any of the games so cover was your only form of safety. Now I can spam jump. Which makes it fast pace but yeah...
I also think the stakes were fairly high in regards to impact, but the characters felt more like a "slice of life anime" where they don't have many serious issues and more comedic moments. Which I don't have a problem, but even I(Even though I love comedy) want some more serious moments. Also all the human/Asari faces seemed to(hopefully I am not offensive) weird. Like they have been poofed up. I think it is because of how they model characters is different now. It was 2017, so gaming design has changed. BUT also the customization was "WOOOW"....Like any time I tried to design my own I was like "This looks like 2006 model...." Only the already pre-made models looked at least decent enough to pass of normal.
But what I think they did at least do right(Although maybe a lot) was setting up potential events later on. Such as the many side quests could be impactful in a sequel. Such as if you side with Sloane or Reyes. At the end of the the conflict between Collective and the Outcasts, when letting Reyes kill Sloane, her second(maybe lover) is in a jail cell and he very much makes it clear he wants revenge for Sloane's death and also for the betrayal of us. He did vouch for us before. Or if you side with Sloane you try to kill Reyes he escapes. Meaning he could return later to continue the conflict. I love these.
A lot of potential in Andromeda but I do believe in the end it was poorly handled(An EA owned game being poorly managed in modern day?! No way!) From my knowledge EA has dropped the Frostbite engine they used in ME:A which was also used in Anthem. So the gameplay for the next ME game might very much be on the Unity I think. Gaming companies have so much more money than they did 10 years ago or even more and these days big companies yet fail or barely live up to the expectations of previous installments. Poor management and money hungry. I don't think it was a "bad idea" but do wish there was better handling of story, and gameplay. At least we had companions quests and I did enjoy the movie night quest.
Definition of mediocre, if it wasn't a Mass Effect game that wouldn't be so bad, but being so unremarkable, bland and boring while at the same time being part of a series known for being incredibly great makes that unacceptable, the execution was as bad as it gets and going to another galaxy with no characters we know and care about was not a good idea but on the bright side at least that meant no characters we like got ruined and it's easy to pretend the game isn't even a Mass Effect game.
Fun gameplay, okay story (I don't mind bog standard hero's journeys personally), okay characters, sometimes very drawn out (never was a fan of how misc quests were in DAI and MEA, while somewhat better, was still annoying with them at times). Overall I enjoyed it but haven't really been motivated to replay it.
^Nor have I. Do kind of wish there was a story DLC to the game. Not that it would've changed the reviews of the game. But at least I could do more. Granted the game took me 90 hours while the entire main 3 game trilogy was about 110 hours
Well, it wasn't terrible at all. There's lots to be improved on, though, but it didn't deserve the bad rep that it received.
It was a buggy mess with no soul, it deserved every bit of bad rep it got if not more
Like I said doomed to fail even if it have been completely bugfree and had no other technical difficulties. The only thing it did good and even better then the other games where having seperate ability cooldowns and its freeform combat.
I used to think the combat was better, but it's so mindless, you just shoot and spam powers without any thought, most of the fights take place in locations that are open and enemies are just wandering idiots (not that cover and good positioning actually matters) it might look superior, but when you dive in it's just not, you fight every enemy the same way, you don't have to worry about using the correct powers or anything like that, it was kinda fun the first time i played, but now it feels like a chore, also there's the stupid decision of making classes pretty much irrelevant.
But i'll give credit where it's due, the combat is at least good in the multiplayer since you can't have every power and if you try to go rambo you'll die easily, especially if you're playing alone, the maps are also pretty cool.
What do you think?
