Forums: Index > Policy > File Name and Format Standards

This page is for discussing a policy related to the Mass Effect Wiki that may or may not be passed by the community. The Form below serves to describe the Policy and what it is about, or what it will modify.

Policy:[]

Description of Policy: When uploading files to this wiki, uploaders must ensure that those files have descriptive and informative file names (for example, an image depicting James Vega wielding a shotgun against a group of husks would go under File:James Vega shotgun.png, or File:VegaHuskAttack.png, etc.), and not random strings of letters and numbers (File:2008-07-24image.jpg, File:sdcf8r4rr2.png, etc.). Additionally, where possible, uploaders must ensure that any images they upload are under the .png format, rather than .jpg or other formats. A file that does not meet these standards may still be used in an article, but if a duplicate file that meets the standards is uploaded to replace the non-compliant file, then the non-compliant file may be deleted immediately.
This policy does not apply to files used expressly in personal user pages.

Other Notes[]

This is an attempt to address a couple of pet peeves I have with uploading images. Many images that users upload here have gibberish for file names, and I feel that's lazy when it takes only seconds to compose a tidier file name that means something and makes a file a little bit easier to identify, an actual name. I believe that giving files descriptive names should be encouraged. As for formats, the format .png is already preferred at this wiki in practice, so we might as well make it official. -- Commdor (Talk) 18:19, October 1, 2011 (UTC)

Support[]

  1. As proposer. -- Commdor (Talk) 18:19, October 1, 2011 (UTC)
  2. Support. Some tidiness from uploaders is just good wiki citizenship -- quite reasonable to ask for. PNG is a nicer format than JPEG, and it's not hard to convert before you upload. Diyartifact 21:21, October 1, 2011 (UTC)
  3. Neutral and balanced proposal. I like. We seem to be leaning in that direction with the .png formats anyway. Lancer1289 02:10, October 7, 2011 (UTC)
  4. Support. Sounds good.--Captainhu 05:48, October 7, 2011 (UTC)
