Other Notes
Hi everydoby,
The current state of my sandbox page should give you a good overview of what the final page should look like and what it should contain. I'm now waiting your support and advices to go further on this project. All help is also more than welcome. When this topic will be enough discutated and if we reach a consensus to the design of the page, I will put a "final" version to a vote. --DeldiRe 10:35, June 12, 2013 (UTC)
Vote is now open to implement a page with the current design when the page will be finished. Discussion are still open to see which order we want. Feel free to make comments and/or try to participate to the construction of the page. Thanks --DeldiRe 07:50, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
As pointed by theunknown85, we will also add a link to this article in the relevant article (for example, link to this page, chapter ME2 DLC, on the page for the DLC shadow broker). --DeldiRe 10:35, June 17, 2013 (UTC)

Looking good to me! Will the final versions link to the actual trailer videos somewhere, e.g. YouTube or something? (Right now under the "video" column clicking the picture links to... a picture). Also... is it okay to do minor cleanup in your sandbox? Cattlesquat (talk) 15:17, June 12, 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Cattle, the link is on the title and not on the picture (I'd like to do it but I can't fin the right code to do so). And yes do all the cleanup you want and if you know some infos (such as the title of the music,...) go ahead :)--DeldiRe 16:03, June 12, 2013 (UTC)
i'm actually scratching my head at a loss at what to do and say here. probably the lateness of the hour. anyway, apart from some cleanup of your project i'm sure you won't mind:
- manual of style actually allows official trailers to be uploaded in this wiki, though pending admin approval. your life may be made easier if you gathered them all in this place if this ever gets approved.
- this may mean we'll have to delete the placeholder images you uploaded since videos generate their own thumbnails anyway.
- this may also mean further adjustments to the table formatting as nobody wants to click on teeny tiny video screens. the point is moot until the vids are uploaded though. - First, Thanks [1] for your cleanups, both of you. For the upload of the video, it could a great addition to have them on the wiki but then we will loose the definition that are given in the youtube. Don't you think ? However the link can stay for that. I'd like to have more advises (especially for admin because MoS want to ;) ) to decide and finish the design phase and put it into a vote.--DeldiRe 18:41, June 14, 2013 (UTC)
- the resolution won't degrade if linked directly from, say, bioware or EA's accounts on youtube. you don't have to download-reupload the whole thing, just paste the link and wikia's system will take care of the rest. the guy who got blocked recently for repeated violation of no video policy had the reckoning trailer ripped from IGN, it's in 720p. same as the uploaded source file on the other site. - I would also try to not spoil the current layout because we do not need a huge article for such content. The idea is to help people to find what they are looking for and to give them a change to enjoy every cinematic of the game which are "always" epic ;). The simple list with little picture seems a good way (IMHO).--DeldiRe 19:01, June 14, 2013 (UTC)

It seemed vaguely strange that the Mass Effect trailers were separated from the Mass Effect 2 trailers (I mean, with Paragon Lost in the middle). I guess if this is the chronological order of release that's a reason, but in general I'd lean toward having all the "big three" stuff at the top. Also, are there going to be Mass Effect 3 trailers in the article? Cattlesquat (talk) 18:47, June 14, 2013 (UTC)
- Sure I will put ME3, ... But I won't do all the job until we have a good design and a positive vote to implement this page. For the order of the trailer, there is three ways to do it (with "others" always in the end I think") :
- Chronological in ME Universe (such as now)
- The big game first (as you propose)
- Chronological (by release date of the game)
I'm not really sure what can be the best. I do like your proposal, we could make (ME trilogy/Trilogy Package/ME Mobile game/other media/Others)--DeldiRe 18:53, June 14, 2013 (UTC)

- The code for linking the trailers with the image is this:
[[File:Screenshot blah blah.png|150px|link=http://www.youtube.com/BLAHDIBLAH]]
- I think it would be better to have them on the wiki because they can be watched here, rather than opening a new window/tab. (I think that's how it works. It should open up like when you click on an image that doesn't have a link specified.) And these are official videos, which do fall under the video policy. And you don't have to bother with that extra
link=etc
junk.
- Try embedding one of the trailers so we can see how it looks on the Sandbox. Trandra (talk) 20:32, June 14, 2013 (UTC)
- Not so bad that way. If we keed going that way, could you delete the image i had previously uploaded ? Thanks --DeldiRe 13:55, June 15, 2013 (UTC)
- Trandra, (or somebody else) could you delete the picture i had previously uploaded because the video will be implemented and the caption is automatic. thanks--DeldiRe 07:40, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
Two things: 1) I think I'd rather see the trailers go on the related articles instead of being together on the same article. For example, the Miranda ME2 trailer should go on Miranda's article instead. 2) What about the Gamestop commercials for pre-order bonuses? For example, this trailer? TheUnknown285 (talk) 00:26, June 15, 2013 (UTC)
- 1) I wanted to do both, the list as it is in my sandbox and then a link to this complete list from the related article (there are sometimes already present in trivia). 2) Mmmmmh I don't know ;) --DeldiRe 11:48, June 15, 2013 (UTC)
I'm giving my opinion and that is that this is just a waste of time. I cannot see what this will do for anything because it is nothing more or less than either a page of links or a page of videos which can be accessed on another site. This does nothing to enhance the wiki and I still have yet to see anything that justifies it. Lancer1289 (talk) 14:36, June 15, 2013 (UTC)
- I will respectfully disagree - links to high quality official videos with content for the original Mass Effect games seems highly relevant to the wiki to me. Cattlesquat (talk) 14:47, June 15, 2013 (UTC)
- We have a page for nothing but links? How is that good use of wiki space? I'd rather put links on the pages themselves if someone is going to be so adamant about it. Lancer1289 (talk) 15:01, June 15, 2013 (UTC)
It permit a quick access to all official video which are lost in a huuuuuuuge amount of fan video in Youtube. That's why it is useful information. And as you know, we proceed with links to be in line with the MoS that you seems to like so much. --DeldiRe 16:07, June 15, 2013 (UTC)
- speaking of lost trailers, i believe ME3 had a shitload of trailers before its launch. never really found the time to watch any of it though (except major coats' one) T̴̴͕̲̞̳̖̼̱͒͛̎͒ͫ̃ͧeͩ̈̽̈҉͓̝̰̼̦̫̤̀͠m̫̪̪̯̻͎̫̅̇̓̇͌̚p̸̙̝̓̓͌ͨ͆ͣͥ̂̕o͒̽͐̽͏̞̬̻͕͔͕͚̰͍͠͞ṙ̢̞͚͈̹̰ͨ̓ͭ̈́̌ạ̢̧̪̹̺̺̣̹̲͂͆̏ͪͨ͒ͭř̹͈͜͠y̷͍̻̜̹̼̾̽̈́e̵̹̼̟̦͚͐̈́͌͘d͉̲̣̻͉̱͗̅ḭ̷̻̆͋̆̓̔͝t̨͍̦̫̗͂̅̍̋̆ͩ͝ộ̫̟̬̳̝̲̾ͫ̒̿ͮ̑̚rͯ̎ͨͭ̄̿̽͛҉̠̫̱̠̘̘̲́ͅ7̩̻ͤͩͨ͝͡8̜̣̙͇̻ͨ͛͛̆͒̆̽̒͐͜͡ ͥ̍̉̃̇ͥ̓ͨ͏̕҉̥̹͓̗̤̠̖̤ (talk) 07:45, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- Yep, and most of them are really great --DeldiRe 07:53, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
This page will be nothing more or less than a waste of space and I cannot support a page that is nothing but a page of links. Lancer1289 (talk) 14:46, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- I like your positive attitude and sweet words (as much as when you start an edit war with an anon). --DeldiRe 15:41, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- Wow. Do you even think before you type? Your words are just beyond insulting. Lancer1289 (talk) 15:50, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- Oh yes I do, I weight my words as good as I can in English. But it is fun that you ask such kind of questions when we read your classics answers. However, I'm not "beyond insulting" at all, if you think that "sweet" or "like" are insults it's your problem not mine. And if you feel insulted by the reference to the edit war, I would be glad to put a link to this episode when you broke MoS. Though this is not the point of this forum, so I will leave it to that --DeldiRe 16:08, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- I'd like to politely and respectfully direct us back to the topic at hand. :-) Cattlesquat (talk) 19:27, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
Once again (DeldiRe has raised this idea at least twice before), I oppose this proposal in the strongest possible terms. In my eyes, an article devoted entirely to trailers has no redeeming value whatsoever, the very idea is ludicrous. Trailers simply do not deserve such emphasis. Other wikis realize this, I know of none which have articles for Trailers either, and for good reason. Trailers are not games, nor books, nor comics, nor even soundtracks; they are not a product, they are advertisements for products. They contain no persistently useful lore or gameplay information that is not already present in the actual ME media, and can at times take significant liberties with established facts as presented in that media. At the most, trailers warrant links in the External Links sections of the relevant media articles, nothing more. -- Commdor (Talk) 21:11, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for those persuasive and cogently argued points. Having not personally watched most of the trailers I was not aware that the trailers don't contain any useful lore or gameplay information (though I will admit sometimes enjoying the animations, artwork, and performance value in some of the ones I have watched, marketing or not). I'm going to leave my yes vote for now, partially for the same reason a journalist/tourguide in Bogota recently gave me when I asked why he was taking so many pictures without even aiming and hardly any would turn out well - "have you seen the price of film these days?" :-) But now I definitely understand the points against in a way I didn't before. Cattlesquat (talk) 21:26, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- As an aside, I have had to delete all of the video files DeldiRe uploaded for this project. Temporaryeditor78 points out that admins can make exceptions in the case of this wiki's rule against uploading video files (a provision I admit I was not previously aware of), but as far as I can tell, no permission was given on this page, DeldiRe's talk page, or the talk page of an admin for DeldiRe to do so.
Furthermore, even if this Trailers article is implemented, I see no reason to provide direct video files of trailers when a link to the trailer would serve the same purpose and preclude the need to overlook the video file prohibition. -- Commdor (Talk) 21:11, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- The upload of the video have been discussed with Trandra and she ask herself to give it a try (on this page). Furthermore, as pointed by TE78, there is a specific exception in the MoS regarding the official video who can be uploaded, that's why we did so. Then I hope you will reintegrate them because there are necessary for the vote... And for your second comment, I was ok with you and I wanted to do so but others users provide arguments to do it with a proper embedded video instead of a simple link, and as we said, those are not even prohibited (see MoS about video). --DeldiRe 21:20, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- On this part I have to agree with DeldiRe, it seems like Trandra was on board with the "trial only, pending project vote" upload and even encouraged it (EDIT: and also pointed out that official videos are already okay under the policy); I don't think DeldiRe had uploaded anything before that, and I think he deserves benefit-of-the-doubt pending the project vote. Admittedly the discussion thread here looks like a giant unreadable pile of puke for some reason, so I can hardly blame you for missing it. Cattlesquat (talk) 21:33, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- As you said, I did not uploaded anything before the permission. I know how MoS can be strict (and, most of the time, for good reasons). --DeldiRe 21:49, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- The only comment on this page signed by Trandra suggests embedding videos, not uploading them. Although embedding apparently uploads video files now (which I didn't know until minutes ago; Wikia has changed the functionality of the code), it did not do so formerly. If Trandra can clarify her comment and affirm that she did give you permission to upload video files, then I will un-delete them. -- Commdor (Talk) 22:06, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- Trandra also said:
- I think it would be better to have them on the wiki because they can be watched here, rather than opening a new window/tab. (I think that's how it works. It should open up like when you click on an image that doesn't have a link specified.) And these are official videos, which do fall under the video policy. And you don't have to bother with that extra link=etc junk.
- ... which certainly seems pretty explicit about "on the wiki", not to mention saying that (I don't know if correct, but she said it) that official videos are different under policy. I've left Trandra a note asking her to clarify what she meant, but I will certainly stick up for DeldiRe that her note sounds a lot like permission to me. Cattlesquat (talk) 22:09, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- Trandra also said:
- I'll also separately implore you that given the Trandra entry (even without clarification), and the changed wiki functionality (she certainly explicitly asked DeldiRe to
uploadembed one), and the 7-day-only nature of the vote, that the interest of the wiki & community strongly weigh toward restoring the videos long enough to conduct the vote w/ a functioning mockup. If the project passes the videos get to stay, if it fails they'll be gone in 7 days and not taking up space. Whether DeldiRe is right or wrong on the substance of this being a good idea, he's clearly operating with the best of intentions, and had at least implicit blessing of an admin in doing his mockup. Cattlesquat (talk) 22:14, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- I'll also separately implore you that given the Trandra entry (even without clarification), and the changed wiki functionality (she certainly explicitly asked DeldiRe to
- (Edit Conflict) Explicit would be Trandra saying "You can upload videos". Embedding (as I understood it before today) was a process of displaying videos in articles without uploading them. I don't know when Wikia changed how embedding works (embedding automatically uploads YouTube videos to the site now), so I don't know for certain if Trandra knew either. But if she doesn't respond by tomorrow, I'll re-upload the videos and allow them to stand for the duration of the vote or until Trandra states she did not give permission for the videos to be uploaded. -- Commdor (Talk) 22:26, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for that! Cattlesquat (talk) 22:33, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- That's for sure that i'm acting in complete good faith... however I would prefer to speak about the content of the page to see how we can built it (if we do) and how we can improve it with a worthy content. As lancer said, a simple list of link is not so useful, however, information such as relevant explanation of the video (trivia, description of events, ...) or the music title,... is far more handy for wikia users. So could we please speak about the content and not about MoS, I'm tired of arguing with admins about that, especially when I did everything in the list "legit" way possible (on my sandbox page, with a discussion open to community, asking advice from admin and senior editors, opening a vote, respect of the MoS,...)--DeldiRe 22:22, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry for replying so late, but please note that I specifically gave permission for "one" video. One is not equivalent to eight, which is the number of videos you uploaded. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were a bit overeager, and didn't read carefully enough. Here's some broken-ish French: "Un n'est pas huit. D'accord?" Trandra (talk) 05:24, June 18, 2013 (UTC)
- As you said, simple question of interpretation ;). But still why do you give the benefit of the doubt ? you should know and be certain at 100% that it was done in clearly good faith. I feel a bit like a Calimero, I'm being accuse but I just want to improve the wiki as you well know. However thanks for the clarification. --DeldiRe 09:03, June 18, 2013 (UTC)
I would say that as official Mass Effect media the trailers most certainly are worth including on this wiki. They have entertainment value just like the books, comics and games do. Having a page for them is harmless and helps people. This is a repository of information regarding Mass Effect as a whole, not just the fictional universe but the real franchise as well. The trailers are a part of this and I am certainly glad that this was here as it directed me to some that I did not know off before which is something that is of value to myself and no doubt others. Phalanx (talk|contribs) 22:17, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- But this can just as easily be accomplished by providing links for all trailers in the External Links sections of the game/book/comic/etc. articles. There are already places where this information could go, so why gather it into a separate page? We wouldn't have an article called "Release Dates" displaying the release date information of ME media since the media articles already cover that info, it wouldn't make sense. -- Commdor (Talk) 22:26, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
- That would be fine but I would rather see both. I view this as an index page, not as a full article, although ways that it could be fleshed out into one have already been mentioned I think. The trailers are more than just small trinkets of information like the release dates, they are bit of media that have value of their own. Phalanx (talk|contribs) 22:38, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
So, my official two cents--I am neutral, leaning against because I would rather the official trailers be embedded on their respective game/film/comic pages, rather than a separate "Trailers" page. The thing linking these all is that they are promotional videos, which doesn't really make sense from an organizational standpoint for our wiki. If you're looking for videos, you would search Youtube, right? And you would most likely be on this site looking for information about the games, not the videos specifically. I feel that they would have the best visibility if the person is interested in the topic the video is promoting first, rather than catching the random people over here looking for videos specifically. Trandra (talk) 05:14, June 18, 2013 (UTC)
- Which is why I think it should be both. Have links on the appropriate pages, if not for every relevant one then for the main/launch trailers, and use this so people know they've seen them all. This also has an advantage over YouTube searchs in that you know everything that is there and that you are getting the best quality video available. I don't see why it should be one or the other. Both options have different advantages. Phalanx (talk|contribs) 06:53, June 18, 2013 (UTC)
- When i proposed implementing trailers in the past, and it took up a chunk of my talk page, what Trandra said is basically what I envisioned - each release has the trailers for it on its own page, in the same manner as box art images, or the Collector's edition advertisments, etc. I appreciate the work DeldiRe has done on this page, but I really don't like it. Garhdo (talk) 12:46, June 19, 2013 (UTC)

It really wouldn't have a huge amount of impact on anybody who doesn't use the page, so why oppose it?
