The N7 Crusader is a shotgun in Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda.
Mass Effect 3[]
Description[]
Bruised and bloody Alliance marines on Torfan attributed their survival against waves of batarian mercenaries to the precision and stopping power of the Crusader. With a design patterned on riot shotguns, this weapon has a moderate rate of fire that rewards careful aiming. Since this accuracy requires little room for error, the Crusader is primarily used by highly trained soldiers.
Acquisition[]
- Singleplayer
The N7 Crusader is included in the N7 Collector's Edition Pack as a bonus item for players who order the Collector's or Digital Deluxe Edition of Mass Effect 3. An e-mail is received as part of the acquisition package.
In the Legendary Edition it is available from the Spectre Requisitions terminal in the Citadel Embassies for a base amount of 125,000 credits.
- Multiplayer
Weapons are randomly rewarded through purchases of item packs. The N7 Crusader is categorized as ultra-rare and requires no multiplayer expansion packs.
Player Notes[]
- General
- Instead of a spray of pellets, the Crusader fires a single, precision, high-powered slug. Four shots can be fired semi-automatically before needing to reload.
- The Crusader is able to pierce through obstacles by default without any reduction in damage, much like the Javelin or Executioner Pistol. It has a base penetration of 0.5 meters.
- This penetration does not grant additional damage on armored targets, except to the extent that it won't be blocked by any armor plating.
- Shots that penetrate objects suffer no damage penalty for doing so unless Armor-Piercing Ammo (though not Armor-Piercing Rounds or Drill Rounds in multiplayer) is active on the weapon. The Shotgun Shredder Mod and Shotgun High-Velocity Barrel likewise will not penalize the damage of shots that pierce through objects when equipped on this weapon, despite the mods' descriptions. Equipping both grants the Crusader up to 1.8 meters of penetration.
- The Crusader is very accurate by default; also, unlike most shotguns, its accuracy can be further improved by aiming down sights (zooming), making it more than capable of landing precise shots at long range, though this exacerbates recoil.
- The Shotgun Smart Choke mod can further improve its accuracy, though only marginally, and only when aimed down sights.
- Like most shotguns, the Crusader gains no accuracy benefit from being fired from cover.
- The Crusader's damage-per-shot exceeds the M-99 Saber and is on par with powerful sniper rifles like the M-92 Mantis; unfortunately, it is far heavier than either, and one of the heaviest weapons in the game. It's comparable with the Black Widow: while lacking the Black Widow's long-range accuracy and slightly less damaging per shot, the Crusader is much more effective at shorter ranges and has a faster rate of fire.
- The Crusader has a high rate of fire for a shotgun as well as a very fast reload; however, a large amount of vertical recoil is produced after each shot, which will cause rapidly-fired shots to miss if not compensated for.
- Because all of the damage is placed into a single slug projectile and not multiple lower-damage pellets, the Crusader is more effective by default against armored targets when compared to other shotguns. However, this same property does mean it is more hampered by enemy shield gates, especially on higher difficulties.
- High-level Disruptor Ammo (single-player) or Disruptor Rounds/Phasic Rounds (multiplayer) greatly mitigates issues against enemy shields or barriers and even allows the Crusader to ignore shield gates. This can make the Crusader capable of handling any foe at any range with ease.
- There is a 0.1 second delay between trigger pull and the Crusader actually firing. In spite of that slight delay, the weapon is still considered a hitscan weapon, as the game registers a shot, its origin and direction once the trigger is pulled, though the actual shot, its animation, and the effects of any resulting damage are delayed, which can make the weapon feel less accurate against moving targets.
- To mitigate, shoot where you expect the enemy to be in a split second.
- The above is actually a characteristic of most shotguns, but only the Crusader has a delay long enough to be especially problematic.
- The Crusader has a moderate ammo reserve that can be used up quickly with extensive use. The Shotgun Spare Thermal Clip mod can mitigate this issue.
- Single-player
- Unlike most shotguns, equipping the Crusader on a squadmate will prompt that character to keep their distance from the enemy instead of closing in. As squadmates are not affected by weapon weight, recoil, or ammo limitations, the Crusader's high damage and effectiveness at range makes it a natural choice for them.
- Only a Soldier with a weight capacity of 100 can carry the Crusader without power recharge penalties, and even then the weapon must be high level and modded with Shotgun Ultralight Materials.
- Multiplayer
- Because the Crusader has very sharp recoil, it will benefit considerably from powers, weapon mods, gear, and consumables that reduce recoil. The Crusader can also perform well in the hands of turian characters or the Geth Juggernaut Soldier due to their natural stability bonuses from passive class powers.
Mass Effect: Andromeda[]
Description[]
This semi-automatic weapon has greater accuracy than most shotguns because it fires an ultra-dense projectile instead of a typical pellet cluster. The Initiative's stock of N7 Crusaders are heavily modified compared to those used in the Milky Way's Systems Alliance.
Features[]
The multiplayer N7 Crusader got improved damage, rate of fire, clip size and max ammo in the very last update. Prior to that, balance changes to the weapon were further damage and clip size improvements. Bullet trails were also added to the fired slug for visibility.
