Move Proposal[]

I support this move because there are several in game references to the freightes mentioned to be of Kowloon Class. Kowloon itself sounds like it is just the first ship of this class. Lancer1289 21:32, April 24, 2010 (UTC)

Even though I am the only one here, it's been 7 days and no objections so moving the article to Kowloon Class. Lancer1289 17:20, May 1, 2010 (UTC)

Temporary Fix[]

I understand this page existed previously. But in my attempt to fix minor things, I clearly am not allowed to fix a broken link in another member's comment. While I realise the matter is trivial, its a broken link and therefore needs to be fixed. If an admin can fix the matter in their spare time, by all means delete this page. --FoxtrotZero 07:19, June 6, 2010 (UTC)

Deletion of a misspelled redirect[]

The redirect for this page, i.e. Kowlonn Class, is a misspelled redirect that was created then deleted when Commdor and myself moved the page to its present version. Lancer1289 21:06, June 6, 2010 (UTC)

Recognizable versus Athabasca class[]

Some have said that the Athabasca and Kowloon freighters are indistinguishable by sight. But this is not actually true. We know from Mass Effect 1's levels set nearby or inside Kowloon freighters (e.g. Feros: Geth Attack) that their cargo compartments are one story high, while we know from Mass Effect 2's levels set inside Athabasca freighters (e.g. MSV Strontium Mule) that their cargo compartments are several times taller. I submit that it is inconceivable for the vast spaces of an Athabasca freighter to fit inside the moderately sized ships seen on Illium, and therefore they must be Kowloon class. --Lucius Voltaic (talk) 05:55, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

We don't get a clear sense of the scale of the ship (e.g. person standing right next to it). Also videogames including Mass Effect are well known for various sleight-of-hand with interior & exterior scale from time to time. We just don't have enough information to know the designers' intent here. One could make various arguments the other direction (e.g. every freighter the player encounters in Mass Effect 2 is Athabasca, therefore of course they put an Athabasca here too). It can be frustrating, but sometimes we just don't know for sure. Cattlesquat (talk) 14:20, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
But characters can and do stand very near these ships. See this video at around 22:30 and following. And yes, game assets do sometimes show up in weird sizes. But isn't it just Occam's Razor to assume that if we see a ship which looks like a Kowloon and is the same size as a Kowloon, it is a Kowloon? “It could be a larger ship but at the wrong scale” is just needlessly complicating things. It's like saying “That blue asari NPC might really be green! We can't say she's blue just because her model is blue.” --Lucius Voltaic (talk) 08:05, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
A ship class is something that may depend on a lot of factors beyond just general external appearance, so that asari example is inapposite. In the real world for example, a lot of aircraft carriers may share a similar general appearance even across different countries' navies. A lot of tugboats may look similar. Oil tankers. You get the idea. The Wiki has always had a very low tolerance for any speculation, especially where it's not really called for. People can feel free to "headcanon" what they want -- if you want to "assume" (aka speculate) that the ships in question are Kowloon, go right ahead, but the Wiki itself must steer clear of that. Some leaps of logic are allowed, but even in those cases, there's usually a general user consensus as well -- consensus that we don't have here, sorry. Neo89515 (talk) 15:51, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
By that logic, how can we know that all the ships in ME1 are Kowloons? Does the game explicitly tell us, for each and every one, that they are Kowloons rather than Athabascas? Or is that just a context where “leaps of logic” are more acceptable for some reason? --Lucius Voltaic (talk) 06:08, 28 March 2022 (UTC)
previous generations of editors did not, in fact, randomly hand out kowloon designations on a whim because they actually took the time to read the bioware-given descriptions on the mentioned ships.
