Hype[]

This isn't the correct use of a Talk page but who cares. Trump fired, Mass Effect reskin announced. Today was a good day.

Any word on if they plan to make saves from the vanilla game importable? Ale89515 (talk) 16:39, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

what i wrote there is literally what's known as of this moment. only speed-read that though, you're more than welcome to check the sources (and other legit sources of info) to see for yourself if they said anything else . . blind squirrel games and abstraction games' involvement[]

apparently some of the development was outsourced to these two studios. casual googling reveals only information from their own websites and a few mentions from secondary/tertiary sources that merely recycle each other's information with little in the way of direct confirmation.

direct acknowledgement may be required, or mention by other news outlets who spoke with bioware or the relevant people in charge regarding the matter. Grammar, the use of "the"[]

I think this deserves some discussion/clarification here, even if the average user likely won't care. "Mass Effect Legendary Edition" is the name of the game, and it can be shortened to "Legendary Edition" which I think is also totally fine. The problem I'm seeing comes from the use of "the" as in:

  • INCORRECT: In the Legendary Edition, Elanos Haliat is now a turian.
  • CORRECT: In the Legendary Edition version of the game, Elanos Haliat is now a turian.
  • MAYBE OK: In the Legendary version of the game, Elanos Haliat is now a turian.

The first example is wrong as it is treating "Legendary Edition" as if it's not a proper noun, and the title of the game, and instead treating "legendary" as if it's a common adjective modifying "edition." E.g. you wouldn't say "in the Mass Effect 3", though you might say "in the third Mass Effect game"

Full disclosure, I'm NOT a grammarian and could be entirely wrong, but I think this is not the right way to write this, and the second example is correct if you really want to use "the" with "Legendary Edition."

  • BEST: In Legendary Edition, Elanos Haliat is now a turian.

I think this ^ version is the way people should try to use the name, avoiding the issue of "the" altogether.

I say this being fully aware that in "common conversation" people will say "the Legendary Edition" all the time, and even I probably would, but a Wiki isn't written with that tone most of the time. Ale89515 (talk) 16:25, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

While I see where you're coming from, I can't help but feel averse to taking such a prescriptive approach here. Enforcing a standard that doesn't flow well in the language and won't be intuitive except to a very small portion of editors is likely to result in endless policing.
There's also the fact that the official site does use "the" with both the full and shortened title of the game (the Mass Effect Legendary Edition and the Legendary Edition), so I'm really hesitant to go against that in order to fight this battle. I think the most sensible approach is the following:
  • CORRECT: In the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Elanos Haliat is a turian. (first mention in an article)
  • CORRECT: In the Legendary Edition, Elanos Haliat is a turian. (subsequent mentions)
  • INCORRECT: In the Legendary Edition version of the game, Elanos Haliat is a turian.
  • INCORRECT: In Legendary Edition, Elanos Haliat is a turian.
  • INCORRECT: In Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Elanos Haliat is a turian.

Thanks for weighing in. My approach WAS resulting in endless policing so as a practical matter I was on the verge of giving it up. I should have checked official sources. In the US, there is a TV show called "Inside Edition" which I used as part of my logic (my internal debate about this); they don't lead the show by saying "tonight on the Inside Edition", for example; they would just say "tonight on Inside Edition." However, I am in the awkward position of having changed a lot of people's edits to versions you deem straight up incorrect. Perhaps a compromise is best, where we agree to allow either version as acceptable? Ale89515 (talk) 15:14, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
Also, I did look through the official site again, and there's inconsistency there (as I kind of expected, it's not like whoever is in charge of the website is a grammar professor necessarily either, lol we're all human ) https://www.ea.com/games/mass-effect/mass-effect-legendary-edition/news Ale89515 (talk) 15:25, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
Haha, I'm also not surprised that even in BioWare/EA communication there is inconsistency. For practical reasons, I would be perfectly fine with allowing both constructions. Personally I view "of the game" as redundant in "Legendary Edition of the game", but I think we can allow any form that isn't unreasonably awkward.
Otherwise I think it's good enough to rule that any part of the title should at least be capitalized. —Elseweyr talkstalk May 22, 2021, 15:52:12 (UTC)

Calibrations[]

This article says that the Calibrations submenu (the one that controls brightness and HDR) is a reference to Garrus' frequent line. I'm fully willing to believe that. Is Kotaku a sufficiently authoritative source for this? DaBarkspawn (talk) 02:19, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

normally yes, though the relevant bit in the article in question reads like the author's opinion rather than an authoritative "bioware said so". since kotaku is a known entity, it can be used as a source. better source preferred in the future if found though. Thanks! DaBarkspawn (talk) 03:21, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

References[]

Shouldn't we clean the references as the game is now live? It's a bit messy as it is.DeldiRe (talk) 21:15, 12 June 2021 (UTC)

Sound[]

I noticed that, too. I think what happened is that sound was added in the most recent patch. DaBarkspawn (talk) 18:31, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

Could explain it, although it isn't listed in the patch notes, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Cattlesquat (talk) 18:41, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
