Confusion of Classification

Just a bit confused as to what a "Hot Dwarf" is. On the scanner page, this planet is described as an example of a "Brown Dwarf" (probably mis-classified by a user). To me is seems to be a mercury-like planet but with an atmosphere. Is that right?

I don't currently have access to the game, but if the description here doesn't match the in-game description, feel free to edit it to bring it in line. For what it's worth, I believe the correct way to parse the current sentence is "boiling hot, dwarf planet," as opposed to "boiling, 'hot dwarf' planet." Like I said though, if this is inaccurate, don't hesitate to fix it. Dammej 00:34, June 8, 2010 (UTC)
Looks to be a case of confused modifiers. It's a dwarf planet (smaller than Mercury) with a surface temperature of 200° C. I think a hyphen will add the required clarity. PhoenixBlue 02:55, June 8, 2010 (UTC)
Note that the text of the planet descriptions is intended to be a verbatim reproduction of the in-game text, including errors (which should be marked using {{sic}}). I also cannot check at the moment, so I've marked the article for checking. --DRY 15:25, June 8, 2010 (UTC)
Roger that, I'll be able to check the game in about 50 minutes or so. I'll change anything that needs to be and then remove the stub when I am done. Lancer1289 15:27, June 8, 2010 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Well after checking there is no - in hot dwarf. there is only a space between the words. And as these are word for word copies from the game, no - in game, so - dash one here. Lancer1289 17:06, June 8, 2010 (UTC)

Ah, its all clear now. My confusion was coming from the Planet Types section of the Planet_Scanning page, as it is listed under "brown dwarf" and the image is of Osalri. --Looq 20:39, June 8, 2010 (UTC)

Temperature, Gravity and Atmosphere

Osalri's combination of low gravity and surface temperature should make it impossible for the planet to hold much of an atmosphere at all, much less one that's 1.8 times as thick as Earth's. The description matches the entry in ME2's database, but still ... kinda weird. PhoenixBlue 03:33, June 8, 2010 (UTC)

It's been a while since chemistry, but does pressure actually scale linearly with the thickness of the atmosphere? Seems wrong to me, but I don't know that off-hand. I would agree that the presence of an atmosphere is strange, but they don't mention what the atmosphere is composed of. It could be a bunch of really heavy molecules, as opposed to lighter ones like Oxygen. Wish I'd paid more attention in astronomy class to remember the calculations for what sort of atmosphere a planet could hold, given its statistics. :) Dammej 03:40, June 8, 2010 (UTC)
Just to note, as I was checking the - info above, I double checked the planet info, and it is all correct. Lancer1289 17:07, June 8, 2010 (UTC)

Stub

I am curious why the stub tag was readded to this article. By the rest of the planet articles, this article isn't a stub anymore. Lancer1289 15:15, June 8, 2010 (UTC)

Marked for proof-checking per the HTML comment. See also #Confusion of Classification, above. --DRY 15:26, June 8, 2010 (UTC)

Removing sic tag

I don't see why the lack of a hyphen in "boiling hot" would merit a sic tag, since the units here are boiling hot and dwarf planet. Unless someone objects, I'll remove it shortly. Elseweyr [ talk | stalk ] March 2, 2014, 17:49:52 (UTC)

http://english.stackexchange.com/questions/33473/boilinghot-vs-boiling-hot-vs-boiling-hot , http://english.stackexchange.com/questions/39273/hyphenation-in-compound-adjectives . strictly speaking it should be hyphenated for clarity, though it seems its absence is also acceptable.
