Anomalies and Assignments[]

The second sentence doesn't end correctly. What exactly does EDI tell you she has detected? If there's meant to be a link there, then it needs to be added. It's a small edit, but it should probably be fixed. --Faded-Myth Discuss My Workload 21:26, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

Oh wait, I see what you were saying. I can fix that for you. Linking to categories requires an extra : thingy. Faded-Myth Discuss My Workload 21:29, February 5, 2010 (UTC)
It's fine to simply link to the anomaly article too. Chalta 21:32, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

Merging with Resources[]

Sounds good to me. All of this really does fit on that page. BuddyPharaoh 23:28, February 13, 2010 (UTC)

I noticed that when I had high amount of platinum surplus (over 100k platinum) I received a war asset worth 100 points. This may be relevant to add somewhere in the article. Zarremgregarrok (talk) 17:03, August 31, 2014 (UTC)

Another miss[]

I wasn't a big fan of driving across that annoyingly difficult terrain to get at resources but it was better than this snooze fest of grid scanning. I have to pace my gameplay because this aspect is so very boring.

Types of Planets[]

It may be a good idea to include what resources the various types of planets contain, i.e. post garden worlds tend to have eezo deposits, etc. Actually, I thought that a section on this used to be part of this page... why was it taken out?

You'll need to take that up with the anonymous editor who removed it without leaving an edit summary. SpartHawg948 10:04, April 29, 2010 (UTC)

There was Element Zero on Prospect. According to the type, it doesn't have Element Zero. Is it an exception? Or just wrong description? --217.238.189.208 18:21, December 30, 2012 (UTC)

New Patch Affects Scanning[]

Scanning is now about five times faster and the scanning target is much bigger. Scanning a planet no longer takes over ten minutes for a thourough job. Only for the 360 version so far. Added this in the X360 tips area, feel free to move it to where it needs to be if I messed up.

YAY! Bronzey 10:45, May 18, 2010 (UTC)
That's great! That truly is wonderful news. What were they thinking when they added that damn minigame though? "Wow people sure are going to have fun scanning marbles for hours at a time!". 71.22.118.138 00:35, June 6, 2010 (UTC)
This patch came out for the PC around about the time Overlord came out too, shouldn't that be added? I'm on a Mass Effect playthrough so I don't know the details until I complete it, just saying. Ilovetelephones 07:57, June 18, 2010 (UTC)
Heh, I can imagine the minigame in Mass Effect 3 being slowly walking across the entire surface of each and every planet in the galaxy with a metal detector...

UNC: Valuable Minerals Mission[]

Looking for confirmation- I've read in a couple of places that the UNC mineral scanning mission in Mass Effect 1 can give you resources in Mass Effect 2. Does anyone know if this is true?

And if it IS true, 1) shouldn't it be mentioned in the mission page, and 2) exactly how does it affect it?

...If it isn't true, well, thanks for clearing it up for me!

90.197.64.45 09:45, June 10, 2010 (UTC)

As far as I know, the only bonuses to starting resources in ME2 come only from being at a high level in Mass Effect (+2500, 5000 or 10,000 of each resource) and playing the game for a second time (either New Game+ or an entirely new character/import), which gives +50,000 of each resource. There is no bonus for completing UNC: Valuable Minerals. Bronzey 10:16, June 10, 2010 (UTC)
That was what I thought, but I wanted to be sure. Thanks for confirming that for me. 90.197.64.45 10:53, June 10, 2010 (UTC)

The Urz Fallacy[]

The first bullet point in the Scanning Tips ends with yet another reference to the alleged cash cow Urz. See Talk:Urz for information that disputes this, and Talk:Upgrade Guide for discussion about how to better represent this information. I think in the context of Planet Scanning, Urz does not need to be mentioned, considering this new information. LeonKowalski 18:31, August 19, 2010 (UTC)

Changes to the list of planets for resources by planet[]

Would it be worth setting up a list like the one on Element Zero page with the planets listed by location? --175.38.242.213 11:57, July 31, 2011 (UTC)

I really don't see a need to as these planets are more common than ones with eezo, and following the links is enough in this case. Lancer1289 17:17, July 31, 2011 (UTC)
Even though Element Zero is the "rarest", it's actually Platinum that's hardest to get enough of. If you scan planets casually the thing you'll always end up missing is Platinum, you'll be thinking "where can I get 75,000 more Platinum fast"? (Because you need something like 275,000 Platinum to buy everything in the game, compared to 175K-200K of the two, and barely 35K eezo). Maybe we just need a Platinum page? Cattlesquat (talk) 16:54, April 9, 2013 (UTC)

PC centric?[]

Stuff like

"You can scan fast without upgrading, if you must. The scanner reticle moves much faster when the right mouse button isn't held down"

Uh, what mouse button? Not everyone is playing the PC version, the article seems kinda POV that the PC version is the default most people will be playing or something by not mentioning this tip only applies to PC. --76.226.135.254 16:47, August 3, 2011 (UTC)

It isn't. That piece is just written for PC users. ME2 is played on three platforms and leaving one out, or not providing something specific for that platform, just isn't right. Lancer1289 16:54, August 3, 2011 (UTC)

Table of rich planets may be useful[]

As an answer for most common question: where nearby I can obtain maximum number of X element. Something like this:

If JavaScript is enabled, the columns may be sorted by clicking on the up/down arrow icons in the column headers.

Name System Cluster Platinum Iridium Paladium Eezo
Earth Sol Local 1 2 3 4
Moon Sol Local 5 6 7 8

89.222.140.87 03:34, September 16, 2012 (UTC)

I agree. Especially something for Platinum since just based on the pure math of there being a lot more costs in Platinum than anything else tends to be the thing one comes up short on. However my attempt to contribute the following was just rejected as "redundant and unnecessary: "*Based on the above price list, you can see that if you scan planets casually you'll almost certainly end up still needing Platinum when you've filled all your other requirements. So head to Lorek, Bindur, Erinle, Utha, Etamis, Rough Tide - all available early in the game, all with good platinum deposits - to fill out your Platinum supply." I'd argue that it manifestly isn't "redundant" because there isn't an easy list of good platinum planets. As far as "unnecessary" well having a Mass Effect wikia at all isn't really "necessary" but in terms of filling an unmet need to top up on the mathmatically hardest-to-get-enough-of resource in the game, it certainly seems to fill that. So let's get some discussion going up in here and make this better! Cattlesquat (talk) 16:50, April 9, 2013 (UTC)

Nice job on the table, it is now much more clear. You found a great compromise. --DeldiRe 22:59, April 9, 2013 (UTC)

N7 Mission[]

There is an N7 mission I found that isn't listed in the table. That could be because it's a mission that another leads to, but I'm not sure. I've always found it early on when doing N7 missions. If another mission does lead to it, feel free to ignore this post.

It's located on Franklin, the moon of the planet Watson, in the Skepsis system of Sigurd's Cradle. It's called N7: Javelin Missiles Launched.

--Drachemeister (talk) 19:53, November 26, 2013 (UTC)

Correct. That mission is in a chain from an earlier mission, and not one you can find directly by "Planet Scanning" which is why it doesn't appear here. There is a complete list of N7 assignments for Mass 2 on the assignments page here: Assignments#N7. Cattlesquat (talk)

Nebulae Resource Geography[]

There are some of us who do enjoy planet scanning, who get a buzz from each spike, and the more efficiently we can do it the more fun it is. Perhaps admitting that, adversely affects the case for adding the geography of the milky way galaxy to the article with regard to planet scanning in me2. This is a case for adding a small bit of nebula/system information for the 20+ high resource yield planets directly to the article, thus making it easy to plot a course or simply clean up a particular system without having the cross-reference over 20 different pages, so we're not probing the 'snot' out of Uranus for half an hour because we're too cheap to buy fuel, look up each planet listed, and plot an efficient course to get the resources.

Started a playthrough with an imported ME1 character, and needed all the resources. Instead of having to carve out time to planet scan throughout the game as I did begrudgingly on my first playthrough when me2 first came out, I decided to do the 250-300k resource collection at the beginning of the game. Fuel and probes don't cost much, so it's possible to do it very early in the game, especially with some imported me1 funds. Needless to say I checked the hotspots here on wiki and was thankful for the list of high yield planets and even more so for the resource maximums. Last time I spent way too much time and credits because I didn't take into account the logarithmic spikes and how I would eventually have too much of a particular resource. Despite the existing table being invaluable in condensing the then 'bloated' notes section, I still needed to spend time looking up each of the 20+ planets listed on the Planet Scanning Page first to plot a course system by system, instead of crisscrossing the planets for each resource. Although the original existing table is good for those missing a particular resource midgame or endgame when they don't have enough to research a particular upgrade, the table could either be reconstituted where the added nebula/system info could sort geographically, or a complimentary small geographical table could be added below. I assumed the time I spent looking up the nebula/system route could be saved by anyone else who would like to complete the resource acquisition portion of me2 with the starting systems as is already encouraged by the article. Maybe some might think the added nebula/system information is worthless, or at least not worth adding to the article. Perhaps I'm one of the few that doesn't want to go back and forth across the galaxy for some platinum. But considering how the page encourages early game resource acquisition, how it spends a lot of space on planet yield types (which I found awesome in terms of immersion especially with the visuals despite not actually using the information when gathering the 250k-300k resources), and how there is an extensive notes section devoted to increasing readers' efficiency, it seems geographic planning should not be dismissed as something no one would use.

Below is how a second small table could look like. It compliments the the existing table. Players who want to get the rich planets out of the way would find a use for both tables. If an editor finds a clever way to combine the nebula/system info into the first table that would be even better. But leaving the nebula and system information out altogether seems like a lost opportunity. Perhaps an editor could combine the respective nebula cells into one, so the first column has only four different cells, instead of repeating 'Omega Nebula' five times, something I couldn't come up with another example of and thus something for which I could not replicate the formatting. Does anyone else think this information makes the article more efficient rather than less? Thanks for any consideration.--Bearcolombia (talk) 04:17, June 19, 2014 (UTC)Bearcolombia

Amount Needed[]

Don't scan more than you need - more doesn't necessarily mean better. The table below shows the total amount of each resource needed to buy EVERY upgrade in the game. The second column shows how much is needed if all available resources are collected from missions and assignments. The third column shows some convenient places to "top up" a particular resource - all of which are available from the beginning of the game.

If JavaScript is enabled, the columns may be sorted by clicking on the up/down arrow icons in the column headers.

  • If you're playing as an Engineer, you can plan to collect as many as 25% fewer resources due to your Tech Mastery discount.

Comments[]

first off, basic grammar rules. asterisk goes AFTER the item unless you're bulleting it.

secondly, ismar frontier is accessible right from the start but needs either firewalker or zaeed's dlc. either way, it requires DLC. formatting procedure:

  • cell content: Ismar Frontier
  • below the table, above notes: † requires DLC

now, i can't really argue with the basic reasoning behind the making of this additional table. it's one thing to list all scanworthy planets available at the beginning of the game, it's another thing to list exactly where to find them. besides formatting adjustments i think i can let the table pass as is, unless others care to give their own inputs on this. i think some modifications on table content can still be made, but the specifics currently elude me. so what did i just say about the 7-day community voting and time allowances when you asked me about this?
they're there because things like these needed to be smoothed out to prevent picayune squabbles over form upon implementation.
i'm not finding the orbit superscripts to be useful as all planets are pretty much visible on a system right off the bat. it only takes a few seconds to get from one end of a system to another, so superscripting their positions is superfluous. it has to go. T̴̴͕̲̞̳̖̼̱͒͛̎͒ͫ̃ͧeͩ̈̽̈҉͓̝̰̼̦̫̤̀͠m̫̪̪̯̻͎̫̅̇̓̇͌̚p̸̙̝̓̓͌ͨ͆ͣͥ̂̕o͒̽͐̽͏̞̬̻͕͔͕͚̰͍͠͞ṙ̢̞͚͈̹̰ͨ̓ͭ̈́̌ạ̢̧̪̹̺̺̣̹̲͂͆̏ͪͨ͒ͭř̹͈͜͠y̷͍̻̜̹̼̾̽̈́e̵̹̼̟̦͚͐̈́͌͘d͉̲̣̻͉̱͗̅ḭ̷̻̆͋̆̓̔͝t̨͍̦̫̗͂̅̍̋̆ͩ͝ộ̫̟̬̳̝̲̾ͫ̒̿ͮ̑̚rͯ̎ͨͭ̄̿̽͛҉̠̫̱̠̘̘̲́ͅ7̩̻ͤͩͨ͝͡8̜̣̙͇̻ͨ͛͛̆͒̆̽̒͐͜͡ ͥ̍̉̃̇ͥ̓ͨ͏̕҉̥̹͓̗̤̠̖̤ (talk) 06:54, June 22, 2014 (UTC)

sorry for jumping the gun, Temp. I modified the original proposal after considering any additional modifications to which you might have been alluding. The planets' orbits were added for a player to be able to scan select planets without having to tag each one, resulting in a 100% exploration tag for the system. If a player dropped probes on only the resource rich planets, s/he may ignore systems that seem to be 100% explored when looking for anomalies later in the game. But I understand wiki would lose its focus indulging each possible play style. Plus if a player is already using wiki then anomalies may be researched separately.--Bearcolombia (talk) 07:30, June 22, 2014 (UTC)

the problem of anomalies is already addressed on another table in the article. besides, EDI will helpfully announce whenever you've found an anomaly in the course of using your table to mine for resources (only lorek and daratar affected), so really orbit superscripts are moot.
still, one other reason why the ponderous pace for implementation is that people might only become aware of this and comment only days after first posting. people do have other stuff to do outside the wiki. this is to ensure anyone who have any interest in the matter will have said their piece by the time you open up voting.
i myself do have other stuff to implement in and out of the wiki, so the best you can do for now is wait some more then commence voting. as it stands, i can allow this proposal to pass. Adding note to scanning tips section[]

I thought it might be worthwhile to add a note to the scanning tips section that suggests trying to come close to or meet the platinum requirements before actively searching for iridium or paladium. My reasoning behind this is because you require so much more platinum, if you try to farm the other two first, you will end up going way over their required amounts once you start looking only for platinum because of the partial spikes you'll hit of iridium and paladium. Ideally you should get within 15-20k of the platinum goal, then the partial spikes you hit for platinum while searching for iridium and paladium will top you off. Alternatively, you could search normally picking up any large spikes you find and stop well below the iridium and paladium requirements and then start searching only for platinum to prevent going over. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Zarremgregarrok (talk · contr).

Also, according to some information, the amount of military strength (war asset in ME3) you get from the imported Mineral Resources depends primarily on the amount of Platinum. ZypA13510 (talk) 14:50, September 28, 2018 (UTC)

Scanning Tips - Know how much you need[]

I think this section of the tips needs to be edit, considering save file transfer to ME3 requires a certain amount of mineral surplus to get the full 100 military strength of Mineral Resources war asset. However, I cannot find a way to properly reword the section without either a) adding the concrete number of required amount to get full 100 military strength (see the talk page of the link), or b) remove the entire section. ZypA13510 (talk) 15:02, September 28, 2018 (UTC)

MELE Changes[]

This is subjective, so I'd like some confirmation. It feels like the scanner in MELE is less sensitive, that it is easier to find peaks without getting exactly on the right spot on the planet. It also seems like there are more multiresource peaks. DaBarkspawn (talk) 02:45, 6 June 2021 (UTC)

Abundance Indicators[]

This is an excruciatingly tiny difference, but in the scanner view, the order of the resources is (eezo, iridium, platinum, palladium) whereas in the game menu (via escape key on PC), the order is (palladium, iridium, platinum, eezo). I only noticed this because I use a spreadsheet to track how many resources I have, how many I've spent and thus how much left I need and if one is not careful, copying numbers from one screen or the other will cause the values to be assigned to the wrong resource. I think this is worth commenting on in this section. DaBarkspawn (talk) 19:11, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
