User blog:JoePlay/Mass Effect 2 Giveaway/Official rules Edit

"The authorized Wikia account holder will be deemed to be the entrant for Entries via leaving a blog posting on the Halopedia blog page." Copy paste much? — Balistic 20:31, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

Yes, a lot. =P Everytime we do a contest/giveaway, I copy the legalese from the previous one and change the instances of the name of the previous game and/or wiki. Apparently I missed one. Thanks for the heads up. JoePlay@fandom (talk) 18:32, January 18, 2010 (UTC)

Contest entry not working! Edit

I tried to enter several tries (even a couple after I registered). But it always ends with this:

Am I'm doing something wrong?

Grunt's locked page. Edit

I've been going around adding some little tidbits to every other characters about their appearance, and plan to do more with the characters, but it seems Grunt's page is the only one that's locked for editing. How would I get around that, or even get someone with the authority to approve of my changes? Citruspop 02:23, January 27, 2010 (UTC)

Forwarding domains Edit

If i was to forward to, how would I do that? Polexian ♦♦Talk♦♦ ♠♠Leave Message♠♠ 18:12, February 3, 2010 (UTC)

Yes, since there is stuff on here about ME2 and ME3 then we should shutdown the other one and redirect here. Polexian ♦♦Talk♦♦ ♠♠Leave Message♠♠ 20:23, February 3, 2010 (UTC)

SideMenu Edit

The side menu is not good enough for a ME 1 and ME2 and ME3 site. it needs to be changes. who would I ask about this? Polexian ♦♦Talk♦♦ ♠♠Leave Message♠♠ 20:24, February 3, 2010 (UTC)

Forum Topic. Edit

I used your name on my forum topic about stuff. Just letting you know. Forum:ME1_and_ME2

Achievements Edit

Dry and I are having an editing war on Achievements. I want it like this

Mass Effect has 49 achievements worth 1200 Gamerscore points (achievement values are listed in parentheses).

Mass Effect 2 has 51 achievements worth 1015 Gamerscore points.

{{:Mass_Effect_Achievements}} {{:Mass_Effect_2_Achievements}}

See AlsoEdit

And he wants it the other way.

My way is more organized. Spliting the achievements on two different pages for two different games, but keeping the compiled list for people to browse.

His way has all the achievements on one page allowing the user to click on the perspective game and jumping to that section in the page. If we continue to do this, then we will have a page with 2000+ Lines on it for ME, ME2, ME3 and what ever else game comes along. Doing it my way we have 2 lines of code for each game added and a seperate page for the game. Your thoughts are greatly appreciative. Polexian

Thanks a lot Joe, love the skin. --BlackfuryInput? 22:11, February 18, 2010 (UTC)

Caption color Edit

The default color of captions on a framed image is white like the background example Can you please tell me how to change captions color in Monaco.css? Couldn't find it on the help pages. Thanks --BlackfuryInput? 00:10, February 19, 2010 (UTC)

Mass Effect Wiki Admins Edit

We recently noticed that User:PanSola was added as a sysop. They're not causing problems or anything, but none of the active admins knows who the user is or why they were added — and they seem unaware that they have sysop privileges. Is there any way to tell who added them, when, and why? --DRY 08:07, March 4, 2010 (UTC)

Interwiki links Edit

Pleace, see this page and add interwiki links to on English Mass Effect Wiki main page.

Project namespace alias Edit

Would it be possible to add "MEW" as an alias for the "Mass Effect Wiki" (i.e. Project) namespace? --DRY 17:20, April 4, 2010 (UTC)

Menu Bar Edit

SpartHawg948 suggested I take this up with you and DRY, so here it goes. After talking with some users on this site, we were wondering if we could modify the menu bar that is on the left side of the screen. Some of the links there are in need of an update and we do need to add a few new ones. Basically in the small conversation that played out on my talk page, and on SpartHawg948's talk page, we seemed to agree that the menu bar needs to be overhauled or updated at the very least. We were just wondering how to go about this. Thanks in advance. Lancer1289 19:31, May 21, 2010 (UTC)

Unknown User Edit

JoePlay, about two days ago, an article was created and then deleted. However after two days of checking, the user name doens't appear anywhere. I know I'm not an admin here, but I can't shake the feeling that it is maybe someone who don't know they have synop powers. Accoring to the deletion log, Ose deleted the page. I haven't been able to find this user anywhere and I was just curious who they actually are, or if is is just a bot. Thanks in advance. Lancer1289 00:56, May 29, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks but I was actually wondering who Ose was, I have searched across wikis and haven't been able to find that user. Sorry for the misunderstanding on my part. Lancer1289 18:37, May 31, 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, and again sorry for the misunderstanding. Again thanks. Lancer1289 19:06, May 31, 2010 (UTC)

Cross Wiki Spammer Edit

JoePlay, thanks again for helping me with the Unknown User message above. However I figured I'd inform you of that user again, User:Xuebao2010. He is just created a second spam article, 2011 Wedding Gown Trends, and while I dropped SpartHawg948 a message, I thought informing a Wikia Staff member as well would be a good idea. If you can get to it before SpartHawg948, then please do, but the article is nothing but spam, and this is the second spam article he has created. Again, I know I am not an admin, but I am just trying to do my best to keep this wiki free of this kind of stuff. Thanks in advance for your help. Lancer1289 05:51, June 5, 2010 (UTC)

Hey JoePlay, after doing some looking around at other wikis, this guy posted the same ariticle on a few other wikis, Transformers Wiki, CHDK Wiki, Lord of the Rings Wiki, Neverwinter Nights 2 Wiki, Future Wiki, Family Guy Wiki, and the Lost Wiki. IMHO this guy needs a cross wiki ban. He has done nothing but spam wikis. I know some of these wikis fall outside your perview in the Gaming wikis, but I figured I'd inform you. I'll drop a line on the main wiki page as well. But I though I'd inform you of my findings. Lancer1289 06:33, June 5, 2010 (UTC)
Sorry for a third message JoePlay but I thought I'd tell you that I just sent an E-mail to the staff about this. Oh and I changed the heading, it was more appropiate in my opinion. Lancer1289 06:44, June 5, 2010 (UTC)

Request to Fix Broken Links Edit

Hello. I am attempting to embark upon a project of clearing broken links from the Mass Effect Wikia. It is, however, against MEwiki rules for me to modify another user's posts on Talk Pages, and Wiki Staff have asked me to call upon the post creators to fix the error. If you have recieved this message, it is because you are the creator of a post that now contains a broken link. You can find out where these broken links are here, as well as what to do about it. It would be greatly appreciated if you could remedy the situation. I apologize if this message appears impersonal, but it was to be recieved by multiple people. Thanks again. --FoxtrotZero 02:14, June 7, 2010 (UTC)

New Forum Problems Edit

JoePlay, sorry to contact you again, but after Silverstrike and myself, mostly him, managed to get a new projects forum up we are having some problems with categorization. On Silverstrike's talk page, we managed to hammer out the new forum, and some templates for it, but after implementation we ran into some problems. Silverstike managed to work out the problem with listing items by name, but we can't seem to solve the categorize the new posts. Both Silverstike and myself have looked over the tempaltes, and we can't seem to find where the problem is. We would appriciate any help in this matter.

The templates we are using for this are: {{CommunityBoard}}, {{CommunityBoardItem}}, and {{Forumheader/Projects}}. Also the index page for the Projects forum: Forum:Projects.

Because I really didn't know who to contact on this, I'll also contacted Kirkburn, as he is the other staff member who has been here as well. As always, thanks in advance for any help. Lancer1289 16:57, June 7, 2010 (UTC)

Custom css/skins for the <gallery> tag? Edit

Hey, I've been asking User:DRY about this, but he's been quite busy of late, so I figured I'll just ask the guy that's actually on Wikia's staff. :)

Basically, I'm wondering if it's possible to customize how the <gallery> tag gets displayed. Right now gallery pictures have plain white backgrounds that don't really go well with the darker color scheme of the website. I was hoping that we could change that in some way.

The other thing I'd like to be able to change about galleries is to make the "Add a picture to this gallery" button more visible. Right now the link color we have all but disappears into the color of the button. Any way we could change that button's color?

Oh, for an example gallery, check the Armor#Casual Outfits article.

Thanks in advance! Dammej 09:09, June 23, 2010 (UTC)

Very cool. Thanks for the quick response! Dammej 17:20, June 23, 2010 (UTC)

Another CSS change that could use your help: It seems that the image popup uses the "neutral" class that you recently changed for its background. Unfortunately, it still has the old text and link colors, which don't work with this new background color. (Example: Human-Reaper#Trivia, click on the picture. Notice that the text is black. I can't find an example with links right now, but I know that those aren't correctly styled either.) If you have the time, would you mind adding in the CSS to change those colors also? I have what I think should work below. If you have a better solution though, I won't feel hurt. :)

.neutral  {
  background-color: #09101D;
  color: White;
.neutral a {
  color: #71D1EF;
.neutral a:visited {
  color: #809DEF;

Thanks in advance! Dammej 23:41, June 27, 2010 (UTC)

Oh my, how rude of me: Thanks again for the speedy fix! Dammej 05:12, June 29, 2010 (UTC)

Load balancing of images Edit

It's possible that I'm over-examining things, but I thought I'd ask anyway:

I noticed when looking through MediaWiki:Monaco.css that many urls for background images that are specific to this wiki have the form

An example:

.color2 {
	background: #000 url(;

Now, in my experience that looks like a URL for one of many backend Load balancing servers to me. I think in the interest of maximum uptime (and to relieve potentially unbalancing load on wikia's servers), that these URLs should be changed to whatever the URL for the actual load balancing server. I'm not certain what the URL for the front-end would be, but my investigations have lead me to believe that requests to load the exact same images as one of the backend servers.

So, that long and meandering, but hopefully coherent paragraph leads me to two questions:

  1. Am I right? Are those URLs to backend servers, and is the load-balancing URL the one I stated above?
  2. If so, is it worth changing the URLs to the load-balancing URL?

Like I said, I could just be over-analyzing this, but I figured that it couldn't hurt to ask. Thanks. :) -- Dammej (talk) 21:50, July 17, 2010 (UTC)

New Skin issues Edit

JoePlay, with the implementation of the new skin, we are having some problems. Currently the new skin doesn't match the old one in terms of background color, text color, and our thumbnails are messed up. I was wondering if we need to just copy all of the information from Monaco.css into Wikia.css to fix this problem, already tried that and it didn't seem to work, or do we need to do something else. I may have more questions as they come up but as always thanks in advance for assisting with this issue. Lancer1289 17:20, October 6, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the help JoePlay, it looks a lot better now. However I do have another two questions. 1) Is there anything we can do about the text in turning it white like we do currently with the Monaco Skin? 2) Since we need a wordmark, is there anyway you make a wordmark to look like this? 3) As to the wordmark, is there anyway you can make two, one all on one line, and another have it with the Wiki attached to the end. Just so we can vote on what looks better. The staff is good with this kind of stuff and you know the dimensions we need. Ok that was three questions, sorry about that. Again thanks in advance JoePlay. Lancer1289 20:06, October 6, 2010 (UTC)
My apoligies for the confusion then. I saw the two you already uploaded, and they both look good. What I meant was for the one with the "Wiki" text after it, I was hoping that you could make one that had the "Wiki" text the same size as the rest of the lettering. I hope that made a little more sense. Lancer1289 21:31, October 6, 2010 (UTC)
The one where it is on the right. I was hoping that the "Wiki" be the same size as both the "MASS" and "EFFECT" put together. I hope this makes it clearer, again if not let me know. Lancer1289 22:10, October 6, 2010 (UTC)
Sorry JoePlay, but as I was looking at it, and since I am utterly useless at image creation and manuliplation, I saw something that Might look good. After your last comment, I did some thinking and using mental imagry, I can see the "Wiki" being about the same size as the "MASS" and centered on the right. I'm not sure if that would look better than the larger image I described above whter the "Wiki" is the same size as the "MASS" and "EFFECT" put together. I'm just not sure which would look better. Lancer1289 22:33, October 6, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks again JoePlay for assisting with the new logo. I also apologize for the confusion earilier, and yeah Wiki would have looked stretched. So thanks again for helping out. Lancer1289 00:55, October 7, 2010 (UTC)

Wiki-background size limits? Edit

How firm is the size limit of 100KB on the background image? I've been trying to reduce the size of the citadel background image to meet those requirements (without reducing the physical dimensions), and jpeg artifacts become very noticeable once I'm able to get the size down to 100KB.

I can, however, get it to look decent at 187KB. Is there a way that we can still use that image, or would I have to start hacking away at pixels in order to make something like that work?

I ask because I think this will be a general problem with any background we were to choose. 100K just seems impossibly small for the sort of artistic backgrounds that seem to be in favor by everyone here. -- Dammej (talk) 06:46, October 7, 2010 (UTC)

Bummer. That 'save for web' plugin doesn't seem to do much for the filesize or quality on GIMP (still looks like crap at 100K). Looks like the image would have to be cropped. Do you have any insight into the reason for the 100K limit on the filesize? Are many wiki-frequenters on dialup or something? If we were to, for example, edit MediaWiki:Wikia.css (or upload to File:Wiki-background directly) to work around that limit, would the wrath of the Wiki gods rain down upon us? -- Dammej (talk) 00:26, October 9, 2010 (UTC)

More skin issues Edit

JoePlay, sorry to come back around, but we have noticed a few things about the new skin that could cause problems. We noticed that level four headlines (====) and below don't have edit tabs, and considering we use level four quite a bit, we were wondering if this is an issue with the new skin or is is a permanent feature. Probably the best example is Lair of the Shadow Broker (mission) for level four headlines. Also there are a few other things on the forum page we are using to keep track of it. Mainly the other ones right now are bolding of text and bullet color. Again as always any help is appreciated and thanks in advance. Lancer1289 16:50, October 7, 2010 (UTC)

Email Contact Edit

Hey JoePlay, thanks for responding, but I just finished sending a contact email when you edited my talk page. Great minds think alike. Sorry bad joke but I need one after today. However I do have a question a more serious question.

When I was sending the email, I got a weird message. Normally I can recieve a copy of the emails I send to Wikia, but I got this message when I went to check that box, I saw this: "Send me a copy of this message Disabled: Please validate your e-mail address to use this function". The thing is I've had my email authenticated for years now. On my preferences page I see this "E-mail confirmation: Your e-mail address was authenticated on May 14, 2008 at 16:08." So I'm curious is this a Wikia bug or something with my account, or my email. I also get emails for edits on the wiki, so is this why I haven't been getting those emails. Although I'm grateful it wasn't active this morning given what happened last night. Thanks in advance. Lancer1289 23:54, March 28, 2011 (UTC)

Background Update Edit

Hey JoePlay we seem to be having a problem. We just a proposal for a new background image, but we seem to have a problem with it updating. The new image is here. We have uploaded it a few times, but it hasn't updated properly so is there something we are doing incorrectly, is the theme designer acting up, or is there something that we're missing? Thanks in advance. Lancer1289 13:51, May 2, 2011 (UTC)

I want to pre-order mass effect 3 at or, does this include the N7 Warfare Gear DLC? (Exclusive at certain retailers) Also, I'm playing with a dutch account. Will this cause any problems for multiplayer and DLC's?

TemporaryEditor78 Edit

So, again, after years of people asking other admins for help in dealing with Temp's outright disrespect like back in 2015

I have to bring it up once more. You could just go through Temp's edit history and see his lack of reasons, or read through ANY of his archived or current talk page/s But here's a perfect example: are you joking or just daft? "high resolution" my a ss. check what you uploaded again. and AGAIN, read the guidelines before asking questions already answerable there. That's on his talk page. I LITERALLY HAD TO EDIT THE POST TO HAVE A SPACE IN AS S BECAUSE THE SLUR FILTER NORMALLY PREVENTS IT AND HE CIRCUMVENTED IT JUST TO INSULT THIS USER. YOU CAN CHECK FOR YOURSELF BY TRYING TO POST THE WORD AS S WITHOUT A SPACE ANYWHERE.This is approaching quite literally the 200th time he has been rude like this. Please explain to me how this is justified.

Do something about it please. It has literally been years of him being allowed to blatantly harass and insult people rather than teaching them anything while having ZERO accountability.

Portal:Component/Mass Effect: Andromeda Edit

Hey JoePlay,

I was doing some clicking today on the mainpage and I saw that the main portal you created in March 2017 for Mass Efeect: Andromeda has some missing items. A lot of work has been done on the wiki since you created that portal and I wanted to update the following page listed below but it is admin locked by yourself. (I broke the page links below because I abhor extra crosslinks all over the place. When you try to do a special:whatlinkshere search stuff pops up all over the place long after the link is no longer needed).

[ [Portal:Component/Mass Effect: Andromeda]]

I took all of the text from the page you created and made the required changes and put the text in my user space.

[ [User:GS877/Vault Storage]]

Jaal was missing the full name, the equipment section was missing all of the pages that have been created since then, and I removed weaponcrafting as that is the development page. In game always takes precedent according to others I have worked with here on the wikia.

I followed everything you had in place and didn't make any changes other than adding the missing links.

Would it be possible for you to review the work and then copy over the text into the page? Once the copy is complete, I will remove the text from my vault section so that there is no duplication. I hate stuff just sitting out there for no reason.

Thanks for your help. :) --GS877 (talk) 22:38, April 25, 2018 (UTC)

Drop Down Menu Help Edit

Hey JoePlay,

I asked TemporaryEditor78 a question a few days ago about fixing the main dropdown menus but now that I see that you did most of the work for the portals, you may be a good person to ask as well.

I have a link to the question below:

I don't know which of the two fixes is easier to build/fix, but I think that people coming to the site would use the dropdown menu pretty often and a lot of the information is missing.

Could you advise me on the best path forward? Thanks for your help in advance. :) --GS877 (talk) 23:00, April 25, 2018 (UTC)
